Vancouver, British Columbia – A new treatment for men with erectile dysfunction (ED) can help you get back on your feet. The new treatment, known as Cialis, is designed to improve blood flow to the penis, but it will not be available on the U. S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) online pharmacy list of drugs.
The new treatment, called tadalafil, was developed by Eli Lilly's U. drug subsidiary LillyPharm, in response to the drug's FDA approval in 2003 for men with ED, a condition that affects more than 1 million men worldwide. Cialis was approved to treat ED in 1998.
"Tadalafil has been proven to be safe and effective for many men with ED, and it's great news for men suffering from this condition who are trying to regain their confidence," said John H. Smith, Ph. D., chief executive of the U. drug industry group Eli Lilly and Company. "Tadalafil can be a game-changer in addressing ED and helping men regain their sexual vitality."
The treatment was announced by LillyPharm's drug division president, Paul Dolin, after he was named vice president of the U. company's drug division in 2003.
According to the company, tadalafil improved erectile function in men with ED by up to 75 percent. Men with ED also experienced improvement in sexual performance and satisfaction. However, the treatment for ED is not yet available on the U. market.
"Our research is limited, but we believe that the tadalafil study did not provide additional evidence that would be clinically meaningful for the treatment of ED," Smith said.
Tadalafil is the second of the three PDE5 inhibitors currently approved for the treatment of ED. Last month, PDE5 inhibitors such as Sildenafil and Vardenafil were approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men.
"This new study will give men who are taking sildenafil (Viagra) a more reliable treatment option that allows them to have a better opportunity to regain their sexual vitality," Smith said.
Lilly's drug division has received numerous requests from patients for the tadalafil treatment, including those who have had problems with the way they respond to the drug. The company was also recently approved to conduct a phase 2 study for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men who have not been able to achieve orgasm after taking tadalafil.
Smith said the new treatment will not be available on the U.
"Erectile dysfunction treatment is still in development and has not been approved by the FDA," he said. "This is just one step in the ongoing evolution of our pharmaceutical company. It is a long road to recovery from this condition and to finding treatments that work for you."
The new Cialis treatment is intended for men between the ages of 18 and 60, with an average age of 59 years old.
"We look forward to continuing to work with Lilly to make this treatment available to men with ED and can provide our patients with the tools to regain their sexual vitality," Smith said.
Lilly's drug division has received numerous requests for the Cialis treatment, including those who have had problems with the way they respond to the drug. Smith said the company is ready to provide any further information that may help expand the treatment option for the treatment of ED.Cialis is currently available as a once-daily, 30-milligram tablet, containing the active ingredient tadalafil.
"We are excited about the positive results of this new treatment for our patients, and we are ready to help patients with this condition who may not be able to achieve their goals with erectile dysfunction," Smith said.
In addition to the new treatment, Smith said that Cialis will not be available on the U.
